ASIA BUSINESS LEADERSHIP FORUM & HALAL SYMPOSIUM (A Japan - Malaysia Business Networking Event)

INTRODUCTION

The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and Kyoto University, Japan, will be co-hosting The Asia Business Leadership Forum & Halal Symposium on 11th & 12th November 2019. This first of its kind event is a collaborative effort between the Asia Business Leadership Project (Kyoto University) and the IIUM Academy of Graduates and Professional Studies.

The participants of this event would be the Japanese executives working in Malaysia and in the neighbouring countries, as well as Malaysian industry leaders from various fields. In addition, the Asia Business Leadership Project Alumni, and invited academics will also be joining the event.

It is our pleasure to mention that we have invited the Honourable Prime Minister YAB Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to be the guest of honour for this event.

ASIA BUSINESS LEADERSHIP PROJECT (ABL)

The ABL project was founded at the Kyoto Business Research Centre (KBRC) of Kyoto University, Japan. It is a professional development, education and training programme supported by a group of reputable Japanese multinational corporations aimed at enhancing leadership development and professional networking relationships of their future leaders (selected mid-level executives) with potential business leaders in the ASEAN region. Organised by Professor Kiyoshi Kobayashi and a team of KBRC members in2012, this one-year programme has been functioning very effectively. It has three components: English language proficiency training for six weeks, followed by lectures in Tokyo offered by selected scholars and professionals from several countries (including Malaysia), and six months of an internship programme at various countries of Asia.

Since 2013, the Malaysia programme is led by Professor Dr. AAhad M. Osman-Gani, currently Dean of the IIUM Academy of Graduate and Professional Studies, and supported by a team of academic staff chosen from various disciplines. Each year a group of Japanese executives are brought to Malaysia for six months and are assigned to several local organisations. To date, more than 27 mid-level Japanese executives from various companies have selected Malaysia as their internship country. A team of IIUM academic staff are selected based on their areas of expertise to supervise these executives (interns) by considering their fields of interests. After completing the internships, each of the Japanese executives are required to prepare a Business Report which is evaluated by their supervisors and then presented at the yearly seminar held in Kyoto University Japan, where selected academics from host countries and the CEOs or senior executives of the sponsoring organisations are invited to evaluate the presentations. Through various professional activities of the ABL project as well as through informal interactions of current and future business leaders of Japan with their counterparts of Malaysia have been very fruitful in developing professional networking relationships that would be very useful for mutual benefits.

The partnerships between IIUM and Kyoto University has also resulted in the sponsorship of a field research project focusing on the comparative studies of Business Leadership Effectiveness in Japanese and Malaysian organisations. The two-year study focused on the impacts of Spiritual and Emotional intelligence on leadership effectiveness mediated by personal values of the leaders. The KBRC has also sponsored a book writing project on "Human Resource Development for Business Leadership in Asia", where scholars from nine different countries of Asia have contributed the chapters based on the business leadership developments in their countries. Jointly edited by Professor AAhad Osman-Gani and Professor Kiyoshi Kobayashi, the book will soon be published by Pearson Publications.

GLOBAL MUSLIM TOURISM ASSOCIATION (GMA)

For the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games to be held in Japan, a significant increase of visitors is expected from Muslim countries, which accounts for about 23 percent of the total world population. To provide top-level friendliness and hospitality (called "omotenashi"), there is an urgent need to understand the expectations of Muslim tourists as well as develop a good networking relationship with their countries, and then establish a global information provision system using advanced IT technology. It is more important to establish a sustainable system and a broad framework which could be workable effectively even after the Olympics Games ends.

Japanese people are known to be polite and kind to others, which is one of their national cultural traits. However, it is necessary to understand the national character, culture, religious values of other societies and cultures to convey their kindness and friendliness through appropriate services rendered to the visitors from those countries.

Considering those above analyses, a group of highly respected intellectuals and professionals from various sectors of Japanese industries and universities have formed an organisation named "Global Muslim Tourism Association" aka GMA-J, which is based in Kyoto and Tokyo. It was formally launched in 2018 with the primary focus on the East Asian region, and a professional relationsho[ has been established with the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).

This year, a similar sister organisation has been formed in Malaysia named as "GMA-East Asia", which will be launched soon in Kuala Lumpur. The objective is to facilitate the movement of tourists to and from Japan and East Asia by emphasizing on the requirements of Muslim tourists traveling by air and sea. Last year, several awareness seminars and symposia were organised in Tokyo with the help of IIUM's Academy of Graduates and Professional Studies and INHART. These events were very successful and were well attended by professionals from the public and private sectors, as well as by people from the tourism and Halal certifying organisations.

On November 11th and 12th 2019, a two-day event is being organised at the Intercontinental Kuala Lumpur Hotel, with strong support and sponsorship commitments received from the Japanese Embassy, JETRO, JACTIM, JICA, and other Japanese organisations. Some Malaysian organisations have also confirmed their supports for the event (e.g. Ministry of Entrepreneur Development - MED). The two-day event will comprise of the Asia Business Leadership (ABL) Forum, where all the ABL graduates and current participants will be attending, while the second day will focus on the Halal and Muslim tourism issues.
