DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (SOCIOLOGY AND ANTHROPOLOGY)

OVERVIEW

The programme is designed to produce scholars and professionals in the field of Sociology and Anthropology who are competent and competitive, have Islamic vision and orientation, and are committed to its values. In handling the programme, the department approaches the discipline from an Islamic perspective and thus emphasizes infusion of Islamic values in conventional approaches to Sociology and Anthropology. Modern techniques and methods of research receive special attention in the programme in order to prepare graduates who are able to face contemporary challenges.

Candidates are trained in research methods, Islamisation of human knowledge and a specialised area in Sociology/Anthropology to prepare them for the challenging task of producing original research in the form of a dissertation/thesis. The expected length of the dissertation/thesis is around 80,000 - 100,000 words. Areas of research include women, family and kinship, health, environment, criminology, gerontology, social theory, social problems, development, work and industrial studies, and issues on Islamization.


PROGRAMME DETAILS

a. A relevant Bachelor's degree with good grade from IIUM or any other accredited institutions of higher learning.

b. A relevant Master's degree from the IIUM or any other accredited institution of higher learning with good grade; or

c. Any other certificate that is recognized as equivalent to Bachelor's and Master's degree or other relevant professional qualifications and experience that are recognized by the Senate of the University.

d. Language:

Applicants are required to obtain the following language requirements:

i. Thesis written in Arabic Language:

- Minimum Score of 425 TOEFL) or Band 3 for IELTS.

ii. Thesis written in English Language:

- Minimum Score of 550 (TOEFL) or Band 6 for IELTS.

PROGRAMME DURATION

As per IIUM Postgraduate Regulations, for full-time students minimum duration of three (3) academic years with an extension of maximum six (6) academic years.

MODE OF PROGRAMME

These PhD programmes will be offered by research and non-residential mode only. However, six (6) workshops/seminars will be arranged on different issues/topics considering the needs of the candidates to facilitate their study and writing theses. Workshops/seminars will be conducted at International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).

CONFERMENT OF DEGREE

After the successful completion of writing and defend their thesis, candidates will be awarded Doctor of Philosophy in respective specialization subject under the KIRKHS e.g Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science.

MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION

Classes are to be conducted in English or Arabic.
