The LLM in Business Law is a professional course aimed at increasing legal literacy and business law expertise among non-lawyers working in business, accounting, and finance, commercial and corporate environments. The degree also enables lawyers who lack adequate training and experience in commercial law, to develop the requisite skills and knowledge which will equip them to practice as commercial lawyers both within the legal and accounting professions and as in-house corporate counsel and in business generally. The LLM in Business Law is also suitable for international students who have completed an undergraduate course in business, commerce/economics or accounting, who are or who intend to work in business and who wish to develop their knowledge of business, finance and tax law. The Program contains a number of 'Fundamentals' courses designed to assist students who have no prior legal knowledge and which serve as a foundation to the study of more complex subjects which are offered. The sequencing of the courses undertaken by a student can be tailored to their particular needs, knowledge and experience. Our scholars are doing cutting-edge research on issues like the regulation of capital markets, corporate governance, bankruptcy and restructuring, deal-making, and more. The Faculty's activities in business law have benefited from its traditional strengths in the area of law & economics - a scholarly approach that applies economic methods and tools to all aspects of law.

All modules are taught by the full time academic staff of the International Islamic University Malaysia and experts from the industry. Flexible delivery model using mixed mode such as e-learning and face to face sessions will benefit individuals in full-time employment. Use of the most advanced teaching and learning methods using case studies Students will not only obtain exposure to some of the leading academic lawyers they will also have the opportunity to make use of the International Islamic University Malaysia's state-of-the-art libraries and research facilities.


According to current market needs and long term prospect. The market and career opportunities in the globalized world demand experts which are specialized in a particular field of law. With expertise in specialized business law subjects, the graduates of this programme would have very wide job opportunities, locally as well as globally. Graduates would have career opportunities in the Corporate sector, Commercial Banks, Investment companies, Securities Commission, Legal Firms or establish own business. Globally, there is a huge job opportunity for them in the international legal firms, multinational companies, own business etc. Globalization, has seen an increasing demand for a post-graduate programme specialized in business. However most of the programmes available are from the economic perspective. This programme has more impact on the business sector since it teaches the legal aspects in the daily business transaction as well as compliance issues, which are vital in managing a business.


The aim of the programme is to produce law graduates who are capable of dealing with complex legal issues of the current business world and to view and solve legal problems from an Islamic perspective. The approach is very analytical. On successful completion of this programme, a student should be able to:

  • Have an adequate grounding in law research skills and training which will be useful for those who wish to practice in the field of business.
  • Have a comprehensive understanding of the substance of Business Law.
  • Have knowledge of an expert, relevant and up-to-date information about contemporary and emergent theoretical, empirical and policy related developments in the field of Business Law.
  • Have the opportunity to enhance or to update their existing professional or vocational qualifications in a fast-moving policy arena. This is for professionals and practitioners who may already have appropriate qualifications and experience in the field of Business Law.
  • Demonstrate mastery of the various areas of contemporary Business Law with ability to view them both the conventional and Islamic perspective.
  • Demonstrate ability to comprehend, analyze and solve various legal problems at the corporate and national levels.


The programme besides seeking to impart knowledge also aims to promote the development of the following skills:

  • To demonstrate the knowledge acquired by examining critically the primary and secondary sources and materials relating to the principles of Business law and commercial practices both at national and global leves.
  • Independently and effectively conduct research with the use of the available tools including advanced technology.
  • Organise and present arguments logically, coherently and professionally on any given issues on business law and commercial practice individually or in group.
  • Evaluate the business and commercial legal issues and provide solutions from the Islamic and legal perspective.
  • Identify professional responsibilities that are consistent with Islamic and ethical business practices practices.

Academic Requirement

  • Bachelor of Laws with Honours (LL.B Hons) Degree; OR
  • Bachelor of Shari'ah [or its equivalent Degree (for LL.M in Administration of Islamic Law)]; OR
  • Any other Degree with two years working experience in the related field; OR
  • Any other equal qualification approved by IIUM.

Language Requirement (English)

  • TOEFL with score of 600 or IELTS with score of 6.0; OR
  • IIUM-administered English Placement Test (EPT) with score of 6.0; OR
  • Provide proof of attending prior education in English-medium institutions.

Language Requirement (Arabic)

  • Only for candidates who wants to take a subject under the Master of Administration of Islamic Law in Arabic.
